Reading a ledger row

You are following the Slow Read, which begins with the Prologue on Saturday 10 October and reads a chapter a week. Read ahead? Choose the last chapter you have finished. The site hides anything from a chapter you have not reached; this is proof of reading, never of buying, and a library copy counts.

A ledger page has two columns: a wide one for the entry, and a narrow one on the right for its standing, one sign per row.

The status column holds one of the three ledger words: ka (kept, still standing), kha (struck, done with) or na (pending, waiting). Read across: the entry, then its standing.

minu te sorin

stranger of book

a stranger’s book

te links a word to the thing that belongs to it, and the owner comes first: minu te sorin, a stranger’s book. Read it as stranger-of book.

Try it

  1. A row’s status column says na. What does that mean?
  2. Read this entry.
  3. What does nunu mean? (nu is a person; doubling makes a word small.)
  4. Write minu te sorin, a stranger’s book.
